The building, along with the street and parts of the surrounding area, has a fascist origin, deeply reflected in its squared and monumental architecture. Via della Conciliazione, or “The Street of Reconciliation,” was built in the late 1920s to commemorate the event of the Lateran Pacts, which was crucial in reconciling the Kingdom of Italy and the Vatican following the conquest of Rome by the former.

The relative novelty of the street marks an interesting yet strikingly evident difference from the surrounding streets, such as Borgo Pio, which is of Medieval construction.
